Play Ball! A Sports-Themed Weekend


Minneapolis Central Library is currently exhibiting “Baseball: America’s Game” in Cargill Hall.

The “Baseball: America’s Game,” exhibit comprises works from the Bank of America Collectionand contributions from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Major League Baseball Productions, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and Florentine Films. Young and old alike are invited to see George Brace’s photographs of baseball heroes, Jim Dow’s triptychs of major league stadiums, signed player jerseys, magazines, books, video from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s “The Tenth Inning” 2010 documentary, and a special “great moments” section of audio and press photographs of baseball highlights. The exhibit also includes works by iconic photographers Garry Winogrand and Ernest C. Withers; illustrators J.C. Leyendecker and Lonie Bee; and writers Jimmy Breslin, W. P. Kinsella, and Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Library and exhibit hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday: 12 noon-5 p.m.


Sunday is Target Family Day at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  This month’s theme is Play Ball!  Enjoy activities for sports and arts enthusiasts alike! Create a collage using sports imagery, and design your own award medal. Snap an athletic portrait in the MIA Photobooth. Engage in fun games, a sports-themed gallery hunt, and the music of champions.

Art-making: Awards Medals

Be a winner! Design and decorate your own awards medal in a drop-in studio.

Craft a collage featuring spectacular sports imagery.

Gallery Hunt: Good Sports

Celebrate great athletes and important moments in sports history as you tour the special
exhibition, “The Sports Show.”

Strike a pose in yoga classes designed with families in mind, led by Anna Vazquez of
River Garden Yoga Center.

Photo Op

Snap your picture with University of Minnesota mascot Goldy Gopher.

Sports Clinics
Noon–3 p.m.
Let’s play! Join in baseball and soccer mini-clinics hosted by the Minneapolis Parks and
Recreation Board.

Hooping Lessons
Noon, 1 & 2 p.m.
Get into the swing of things in a hula-hooping class, led by Jessica Bessette of Harmony

Photography Art Cart
Noon–4 p.m.
Join us for the unveiling of the MIA’s newest Art Cart. Learn about photo processes
featured in our special exhibitions, “The Sports Show” and “The Sports Show:

Jackie Robinson at Bat
2 & 3 p.m.
Hear stories of legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, as told by a history performer from the Minnesota African American Museum and Cultural Center.


I think the obvious family meal to go with this theme would be hot dogs.  But if you want a little more, you can use this Taste of Home  Baseball Themed Menu as a jumping off point.
