The Powderhorn Park Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will feature activities for youth, entertainment, and authentic soul food provided by Soul Sisters. The celebration features Aztec dancers, a youth choir, West African drumming, hip-hop and salsa dancing, and a Martin Luther King Jr. tribute song. Special youth activities include a civil rights internet scavenger hunt and West African drum lessons.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park MLK Celebration
Held in the park bearing Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s name, this celebration features emcee Danni Starr, local radio host and former Ms. Minnesota International, and keynote speaker Bernadeia Johnson, Superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools. Entertainment highlights include performances by Sha Cage, local actress, artist and playwright. The MPRB will present its “Living the Dream” award to Reverend Jerry McAfee of New Salem Baptist Church for his 20 plus years of service and dedication to improving the lives of Minneapolis residents. The annual award is given to a local individual or group for their unselfish dedication and support of the community and Minneapolis parks. Refreshments will be available following the program.
Both events are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the “Feeding the Dream” community food drive.
